How did it all start ?

It all started in 1982 when the Silva Santos, an immigrant family from Paráiba, moved to Pará in the search of a decent living through the açaí berry trade. Buying the fruit from Pará and the neighboring state of Maranhão, they started selling it on the well-known Ver-o-Peso market in Belem. As time went by, dispatching gradually but successfully the berries from the surroundings cities, they acquired a high expertise in the fruit quality and supply logistics. Being managed by its 3rd generation today, the company carries more than 27 years of experience in this wonder fruit. Our people use this background daily to process the fruits into single strength pulps and purees at an unparalleled price-quality ratio.

Bela Iaça: The legend of the crying palm tree

Natives refer to acai berries as “içá-çai”, which translates to English as the “fruit that cries”. Once upon a time, in the Amazonian region of Brazil, a local Indian tribe was devastated by famine. As the tribe increased day by day, its chief Itaki decided to sacrifice all the children who were born from that day. But one day, Iaça, the own daughter of the chief Itaki gave birth to a beautiful child.

By knowing the fate of her offspring, Iaça begged her father to spare the life of her daughter. However the chief Itaki kept his word and the child was sacrificed.

Iaça shut herself into her hut for almost two days until she heard one night the sound of a baby’s wails.

She approached the door and then saw her daughter smiling at the foot of a slender palm tree. She threw herself towards her daughter, but ran into a palm tree as the child had mysteriously disappeared. Iaça, inconsolable, cried to death.

The next day, her body was found still embracing the palm tree. She was dead, but her smiling face radiated satisfaction. Her big black eyes were inert and staring at the top of the palm. Chief Itaki noticed that the palm tree had a bunch of black berries. He immediately ordered these fruits to be harvested and crushed in a large bowl of wood. He soon discovered that a thick juice could be extracted from the berries that would satisfy the hunger of its tribe. The chief, after lifting his decree on the death of newborns, named the tree after his daughter: Açaí (Iaça backwards).
